Since my own childhood (4 decades or so), we've shifted from letting kids out on their own until sunset to protecting them at all costs. There's a middle-ground, and it's called risky play; you've probably heard of it by this point.

Mother Nature's palette.
Colour is everywhere, and when we look closely we find much more than a quick glance might detect. Careful observation and active discovery will enhance a child's awareness of their world, enrich their creative interests and abilities, and increase their joy!
